Back to Back Nominations for Gold Coast Trade Team

For the second consecutive year a team of Gold Coast tradesmen have been nominated as finalists for one of the states highest industry training excellence awards.

Construction Skills Queensland has identified local Gold Coast businessman Chris Jefferson as a leader in providing on the job training in his business, Maintrade Building Services.

With a staff of just 15, Mr Jefferson has five apprentices indentured to the company but believes that the training doesn't stop after the apprenticeship ends.

"It's important that tradespeople continue developing their skills even after they're finished their time," says Mr Jefferson.  "I encourage all of our staff to continue their education in the trades beyond their apprenticeship and am happy to facilitate their learning with flexible work hours and incentives".

Two of Mr Jefferson's former apprentices now hold managerial positions with the company and he puts their success in the business down to the continued training and education that has become a large part of the company's culture.

In a further reinforcement of commitment to education the company actively seeks to take on high school work experience candidates in order that young people get a positive, early experience in the trades.

Currently, three of his tradesmen are enrolled to complete their Cert IV Builder Low Rise credentials and is, himself, registered in a business management course.  "Professional development in the trades is as important as it is in any other profession," says Mr Jefferson. "Our staff report that they feel a greater sense of fulfilment in their career and pride in their work as a result of their ongoing training and professional growth."

The Construction Skills Queensland Training Excellence Awards will be held at the Brisbane Convention Centre on Friday, November 12, 2010.
